The Burn

It started with a clink, a tiny sound

The saucepan kissed the corner of the sink

Slow-motion liquid shook and slopped around

And waves of boiling water breached the brink

It saturated through thin cotton dress

And in that motion was no turning back

Fierce waterfall on unsuspecting flesh

That sought out every crease and every crack

Five seconds: disbelief, deep gasp, then shout

Pain seared and panic. Quick cold water douse

Search online fast for burns, cupboards turned out

First aid retrieved  by shaken, anxious spouse

Today painkillers, gel packs, staying in

Attempting to restore my damaged skin
